2. De koning ontbood de Gibeonieten en had een gesprek met hen. De Gibeonieten behoorden niet tot het volk van Israël; het waren overgebleven Amorieten. Hoewel de Israëlieten met hen een verdrag hadden gesloten, had Saul in zijn hartstochtelijke ijver voor het volk van Israël en Juda hen proberen uit te roeien.
